Artist Statement

​​

My work is a quiet reverence for the natural world—a visual diary of fleeting moments, botanical rhythms, and the subtle choreography of light and form. Through watercolor, gouache, and ink, I explore the emotional resonance of florals, birds, and coastal landscapes, blending realism with abstraction to evoke both clarity and mystery.

 

Each painting begins with observation and unfolds through layers—of pigment, memory, and mood. I’m drawn to the ephemeral: the way a petal curls at dusk, the hush before a storm, the shimmer of wings in morning light. These details, often overlooked, become anchors of intimacy and wonder in my compositions.

 

Guided by a background in illustration and fashion, I approach each piece with a strong sense of design and storytelling. Titles and statements are integral to my process, offering poetic entry points that mirror the emotional undercurrents of the work. Whether capturing the quiet resilience of pollinators or the shifting hues of a salt marsh, I aim to create spaces where viewers can pause, reflect, and reconnect with the quiet magic of the natural world.

My art is not only a practice of making, but of listening—an invitation to dwell in the in-between, where beauty lives in both the seen and the felt.

About Becca:

 

Becca Colwell is a contemporary artist based in Baltimore, Maryland, specializing in watercolor, gouache, and ink works that celebrate the quiet beauty of the natural world. With a B.F.A. in Illustration and a minor in Fashion from the Savannah College of Art and Design—along with formative study abroad experiences in Lacoste, France—Becca brings a refined sense of composition and storytelling to each piece.

Her work blends botanical precision with lyrical abstraction, often featuring florals, birds, pollinators, and coastal landscapes rendered in soft layers and evocative palettes. Through delicate mark-making and atmospheric washes, she captures ephemeral moments—petals mid-fall, wings in motion, the hush of seasonal transitions.
